Identifying Character: Perennial; Dioecious; Herbaceous. 9 of 30 species of Urtica found in the US and Canada
Stem: Up to 3 ft. 80 - 180 cm, dull green usually covered with stinging hairs, which prick the skin and emit a acrid fluid when touched, causing pain. Obtusely 4- angled; branching,

Distribution

Distribution: Eurasian native; Common to Europe and North America. Growing in waste places,m nutrient rich wood sides, in hedges, gardens to 2700 M Altitude;
Cultivation: Wild Plant; Cultivated only rarely for Medical purposes and as a source of Commercial Chlorophyll; Propagated from Seed, or by root division in spring;
Harvest: METHOD A: . Pull Plant by stem; This will dislodge a section of root with the herb. 2. Cut root into container: Plastic bag in bush, a pail in gardens. 3. Lay tops parallel on a paraflech, or harvest basket. B. METHOD B: Cut with sickle; 2.gather in parallel bunches 3.Place in parafech or in harvest basket C. METHOD C: Cut with mower/swather Processing: Drying on a small scale the herb may be tied together at the base and suspended from rafter, etc. Screens work well as they collect the leaves that fall off. The herb will be dry enough when one can pull the stem though the hands and the leaves fall off easily. This will take from one to 3 days or more depending on drying condition. We are looking for a fast low temp dry. The crushed leaves than can be stored in containers as close to airtight as possible. Gassing with nitrogen or CO2. This will control deterioration from insects, oxidation, etc.
